In Issaquah, Washington on eBay (#140298518422) right now is a first-generation VW-based Manta Montage kit car that looks like a nice base for someone to build a gorgeous vehicle from. The pan is unfortunately missing the title, so you’ll need to source a new title or otherwise re-register it, and the engine is not currently running — but it’s largely a complete car other than the rear window, which a buyer will need to fabricate out of lexan (one poster on the auction mentioned they’d done this for their Montage at a cost of about $70). The interior and electrical also need work. Nonetheless, the Montage is one of the nicest kit cars out there, and there are lots of little touches that make it look more “real” than most kits — to give you an example, look at the second-last photo, of the rear deck. The fact that the car has inner fenders goes a long way to keep it from looking cheap.
eBay, For Sale, Manta Montage | Wed, 14 Jan 2009 Posted by : Shannon Larratt
I’m the current high bidder on this one, so how ’bout everyone ignore this entry.
My old tube-chassis Manta Montage was one of the nicest around, but this one that just hit eBay (#330300653568) in Brooklyn, NY is quite likely the nicest Manta Montage I’ve seen. And it’s been posted with no reserve, so nine days from now, someone is going to be very happy. It’s built on the Manta tube chassis with a 500 HP 455 V8 mounted to an automatic transmission and a rear end out of a Vette. Disc brakes all around, leather interior, tons of upgrades on the bodywork to make it look like a real McLaren M6GT, tilt steering, custom 3″ exhaust, lighted engine compartment, and more… the works. Seriously, this is the Montage to bid on. Like I said, I am.
Aztec, Manta Montage | Thu, 01 Jan 2009 Posted by : Shannon Larratt
Tom in Casper, Wyoming has a great pair of kits — a Manta Montage and an Aztec — that he’s planning on starting to work on in earnest this spring. The Manta is on a factory modified VW Beetle frame, which he plans to put under the Aztec (his favorite car since he was a high school student in the sixties), and then an Eric Martin frame under the Manta, unless he ends up finding a newer VW chassis for the Aztec since the current one has decayed to the point where it’s not worth restoring. Nonetheless, lucky guy!

Up on eBay right now in Michigan (#260267705177) is a stunning tribute to the Cody Coyote from Hardcastle and McCormick built on the tube chassis version with the Pontiac Grand Am 3300 engine and an automatic transmission. Four wheel disc brakes, adjustable suspension (Mustang II front), and a Dakota Digital dash, modern stereo system, a Vintage air AC system, and a rear-mounted rad that keeps the car cool. As part of the Coyote conversion, the top half of the doors have been been removed, so the car is now a full-time open targa… If you’re alright with this, this is one of the nicest Montages on the road, although I think that with a buy it now price of $59,900 it’s extremely unlikely to sell, although it does have a “make an offer” link (personally I think it’s worth around $25,000).

Sonny (who’s also the owner of the 77 Sterling in the entry below) has been picking up some very pretty toys on eBay! Here’s another one of his kitcars, a Manta Montage. His is VW based, on a ’68 chassis using a Vanagon transmission and a 1914cc VW engine. I continue to be quite jealous…
Avenger, Carlisle 1998, Cimbria, Conventions, Manta Montage, Mini 18, Sterling | Wed, 17 May 2006 Posted by : Shannon Larratt
Carlisle ’98… These pictures are thanks of Scott B., starting with this sweet pair of Fiberfab Avengers. The red one is powered by a turbo V6.
Or check out a pair of unrelated cars both built on race-inspired V6 tube chassis. The car on the left, a Cimbria (I believe now marketted in a slightly improved form as a Neria, but I don’t think the company is truly active). The car on the right is now-defunct Warp 5‘s demo Manta Montage.
And I’ve got to admit, I have a real weakness for the fancy-topped Sterling:
(Note the Mini 18 in the background!)

I’ve decided to restart PriceOfHisToys. It was one of the original and biggest kit car web sites on the internet, and when my other projects took off, I basically shut it down. Well, I have a bit more time these days, so watch this space for a combination of images and information from our archives as well as new cars.
